Astrea Bioseparations (UK) was founded in 1987. Its predecessor was Affinity Chromatography Ltd, which spun off from the University of Cambridge (UK) to focus on the R&D and production of adsorption media.

The two core patented technologies (products) of Astrea Bioseparations—Mimetic ligand® and PuraBead®—serve as the cornerstone of the company’s product portfolio. In recent years, with the rise of the Cell & Gene Therapy (CGT) field, the purification of viral vectors has faced numerous technical bottlenecks. Astrea Bioseparations is committed to developing AstreAdept®, a new type of bioseparation material for the efficient purification of viral vectors.

AstreAdept® is an electrospun composite nanofiber chromatographic membrane with a large open structure. It enables almost instantaneous binding of large targets (including viral vectors) to a much larger binding surface area.

Nereus LentiHERO is the first commercial product adopting AstreAdept® technology. This new chromatographic technology addresses the issues of capacity and process time associated with traditional bioseparation tools. It operates under physiological pH and salt concentration conditions, which preserves the integrity and quality of lentiviral (LV) particles. Meanwhile, it offers high binding capacity and high recovery rate, enabling higher yields from raw materials.

The application of AstreAdept® technology allows biopharmaceutical manufacturers to accelerate processes, improve efficiency, reduce the use of buffers, and lower costs. This achieves a faster, more environmentally friendly, and more cost-effective purification process, fully meeting the needs of today’s biotherapeutic innovation.
